What does it smell like? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After smelling it most cats will turn their noses up at human food (depending on what your snack of choice is), however, some will sufficiently be intrigued to take a bite.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pet is the type of cat that enjoys sharing your food it is important that you are careful not to feed your cat anything that could be potentially harmful to them.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a general rule, you should avoid giving your cat <\/span>any <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human food.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are three foods which you should definitely not feed to a cat. Ever!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mypetsies.com\/blog\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mypetsies.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ginger-650475_640.jpg\" alt=\"foods cats can't eat\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never feed chocolate to your cat<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuxedo-cat.co.uk\/can-cats-eat\/chocolate\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate can be lethal to cats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It contains a chemical known as Theobromine. If your cat consumes too much chocolate this can create a toxic build-up of Theobromine which can lead to liver failure and ultimately death.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cat has recently eaten some chocolate no need to immediately panic.\u00a0<\/span>Chocolate toxicity will vary depending on what type of chocolate it was, how much they ate and how big your cat is.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cat has eaten chocolate call your vet and watch out for any of the following symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased body heat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stiff limbs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fitting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cat displays <\/span>any of these signs get them to the vets immediately<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats will rarely eat chocolate as their tongues don\u2019t allow them to taste sweet flavors however they may be attracted to the fat content of chocolate. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cat has a taste for chocolate make sure you keep your snack supplies carefully locked away at all times!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your cat can&#8217;t eat foods with lactose<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yes, it\u2019s true &#8211; you shouldn&#8217;t feed your cat milk or anything containing lactose such as cheese.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may sound like nonsense given that kittens drink milk exclusively. However, as cats mature they commonly develop <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wagwalking.com\/cat\/condition\/lactose-intolerance\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lactose intolerance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is caused by a drop in the production of the lactase enzyme (required to breakdown lactose) with age. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overconsumption of lactose can lead to\u00a0diarrhea and vomiting, much like food poisoning. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symptoms to watch out for include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive gas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased thirst <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dehydration <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased heart rate <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry gums<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice your cat is displaying any of these symptoms after consuming lactose then consult your vet as your cat may require intravenous fluids to treat the dehydration.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid feeding your cat lactose at all costs for their own well-being as much as the well-being of your carpet!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never feed your cat dog food<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you own a dog and a cat you have no doubt caught them both in the act of checking out each other&#8217;s food.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their food looks similar and probably smells similar so it must be more or less the same thing right? <\/span>Wrong!\u00a0Cats need a much higher percentage of protein in their diets <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than dogs. So while dogs can survive on cat food (watch out for the incredibly stinky gas this will produce!) a cat can\u2019t survive for long on dog food.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats also need their food to contain high levels of taurine. Unlike dogs, they cannot produce this themselves.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lack of taurine in a cat\u2019s diet can lead to heart problems, dental problems, and failing vision. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taurine is also vital for fetal development in pregnancy. If your cat is pregnant feeding her dog food could lead to a miscarriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taurine is also vital for ensuring that your cat\u2019s immune system stays in top condition.
